This is a pair of the classic shoes that were worn by ladies in China up till the 19th century. The shape of the foot was obtained by binding from infancy and the shape of the shoes was thought to be similar to the bud of a lotus. This is no longer an accepted practice. The shoes are tiny and usually have wedge or slightly high heels. This pair is decorated with colourful silk appliqué and has black and white braid at the top and cream covering for the sole. Each has an additional flap of fabric at the top back section of the shoe and is lined with heavier cream fabric. They are in the classic shape and form. They are in excellent condition for age (apart from wear at the tops of the opening that can be seen in the images) and are highly collectible but also a reminder of the dress and customs of an earlier period. Length 7 ins (17.7cm). Total weight 78 grams.
