This delightful hat is made of intricate crochet and is adorned with a plethora of colourful decorations. The hat is decorated with fabric pompoms and unusual crocheted flags and insects. Most of these decorations tremble with movement as many are attached by springs. The wide brim and the top of the interior is lined with decorative paper which could need a little attention with re-gluing some of the edges. It is housed in its original cardboard box. This has a large label at the front with Chinese characters and the lid has the address No. 17 Tientsin Road Tsingtao Phone No 3346. This is in Shandong Province. The box also has a narrow raffia-style carrying handle. At some stage, the base of the box has been re-taped, otherwise the whole piece is in very good condition for age, which may be early 20th century. It is particularly special for hat and box to still be together and this would therefore be a special addition to a collection of Oriental items. Diameter of cardboard box 8 ins (20.2cm). Height of box 6 ins (15.2cm). Weight 174 grams. This item appears in my book, "Antique Boxes, Inside and Out" on page 404.
