This is a charming silver gilt thread winder of interesting shape, decorated on one side with scrolls and swags of flowers. The back is plain. The two ends are curved so that thread could be wound on it and not fall off. This piece has a maker’s mark in a diamond and an indistinct punch mark near it which appears to be a boar’s head, which is a French mark for c1838. This winder would have been part of a prestigious French sewing box or set. It is in very good condition for age and would be a lovely addition to any collection of needlework tools and would be a delightful partner to a compatible stiletto which is currently listed on this site. Maximum length 1.4 ins (3.3cm).Weight 4 grams.
