It is very unusual to find a pair of these tiny, delightful French spools that would have graced a prestigious Palais Royal box or sewing set. They would have fitted into specific sized spots within the box. These are gilt and appear most likely to be silver gilt as there is a maker’s mark in a diamond on one of the matching pair which can be seen in the image, but there no other decipherable marks. Each end of each spool is decorated with a central flower with leaves and a further ring with three leaves surrounding this. The condition is very good for age and this would be a fantastic find for anyone interested in early thread/silk holders or with a box that is missing these little tools, which could have originally been easily mislaid. Diameter 1.1cm, height 1.5cm. Total weight 4 grams.
