This is a most attractive quarter plate daguerreotype in a decorative full case showing a couple with the typical dress and extraordinary hairstyles of the pre-Civil War era. The lady is wearing a short chain at her waist with one end ending in a watch passing most likely into a watch pocket. The case is lined on the front with tooled mustard velvet and is in very good condition as is the mat. We understand that plate has been resealed with P-90 tape and is silvered on the back. The actual image is excellent with virtually no tarnish and is very crisp and clear. This is a quality item that would add to a collection of early daguerreotypes, fashions of the day with the added interest of the watch and chain as an accessory. Quarter plate. Case measures 3.5 (9cm) x 4.75ins (11.8 cm). This item can be seen in the book, "How the Watch was Worn - A Fashion for 500 Years", on page 67.
