This is a delightful box in the spa ware genre. Ferns were apparently placed on the item and then pigment was sprayed onto the surface, the ferns removed and the item lacquered. Such boxes and similarly decorated items were made from the middle to the end of the 19th century. This box does not appear to have had any specific contents and it is decorated on the outside and inside the lid. It could be used as a holder for other precious items. Examples of this work are harder to find than other spa styles. The condition of the decoration is bright and fresh on the interior but faded and slightly damaged on the outside (see images). The condition is fair for age. Length 4.75 ins (12cm), width 8.25 ins (21cm), depth 4 ins (10cm). Weight 406 grams.
