This is a lovely little box painted with an orange base with stylized leaf and floral decoration in red, green, blue, yellow and black. This is a typical winged bentwood box. These were mainly made in Scandinavia and this one appears to be Norwegian. It is oval in shape and has prominent and high wings at the side and a small wicker carrying handle. It can be opened by stressing one of the side wings which releases the lid which can then be removed. The interior is plain apart from some slight pencil mark on the base. The bottom of the box has a yellow label that states “Svepask Norse” and a local price. There is a little rubbing and fading of the paint in spots but otherwise this charming box appears to be in very good condition for age. It would add a colourful addition to any collection of Folk Art and would be equally happy displayed in a modern home. Maximum length 8.5 ins (21.5cm), width 3.5 ins (9cm), depth 3 ins (7.5cm). Weight 126 grams. This item can be seen in the book, "Antique Boxes - Inside and Out", on page 65.
