This is an attractive standard design spool knave with a short waist plaque and tongue to attach to a waistband or a belt. This passes to the actual spool knave itself with a chain and has a decorative feature above a reinforced stirrup-shaped section which ends with a knob on each side. In the centre is a long rotating reel of metal and the whole apparatus can be opened by stressing the stirrup outwards when the reel and its containing rod are then released so that a ball of thread can then be placed over the reel and the whole item reassembled. The edge of the stirrup has a decorative engraved pattern as does the waist plaque. The condition is functionally very good for age but there is some loss of the gilding on the waist plaque and the reel. Despite this, this is a very nice and appealing example of the very practical and useful spool knave for knitting or crochet. Length 8.25 ins (21cm), width 4 ins (10.1cm). Weight 48 grams.
