This late-19th century papier mache and pearl shell spectacle case is labelled, 'Souvenir'. It is of black papier mache and the top is edged with a band of mother of pearl and other shell pieces which also are used to outline the word ‘Souvenir’. The case opens from the back via a duck-bill mechanism and would have only held a very small pair of glasses. The condition is good for age with minimal loss to the pearl. This would be a nice little item to add colour to a collection of vintage spectacle cases. 6 ins (15.2cm) x 1.4 ins (3.3cm). Weight 30 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 427.
