This is an intriguing complete spectacle chatelaine marked ‘EPNS’ which has a disc as a waist plaque with the classic tongue behind to fit over a belt or waistband and two chains passing to the holder for the glasses. The plaque and the case have decorative scrolling repoussé patterns. The case has a hinged front opening duckbill flap which reveals a velvet-lined interior. The holder is quite short but is the appropriate length for a pair of pince nez spectacles and such a pair is present within the chatelaine. It is comparatively rare to find a complete spectacle chatelaine with its appropriate glasses. The condition of the chatelaine is excellent for age. The glasses may have a somewhat weak spring so would fall off if worn. Total length 7.5 ins (19cm). Weight 98 grams. This item appears in my book, “Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance” on page 171.
