Work Box Sampler Roll with Varieties of Stitches, c1860
This is an appealing hand-made sampler for a sewing box demonstrating multiple styles of woolwork stitchery. It has been created as a long narrow panel with the ends of silk and the central component of fine fabric mesh. One end has been formed as a cylindrical bolster so that the whole item can then be rolled without creasing or stress. The various stitches are shown in the photographs. The silk sections are all hand-stitched. The general condition is very good for age. There may have possibly been a ribbon tie at one end which is no longer present. This would be a lovely item to add to a sewing/needlework box to add some interest and history. Maximum length 33 ins (83.7cm), width 4.25 ins (10.7cm). Weight 26 grams.
