This is a most interesting bangle of Whitby jet (fossilized wood) which has been intricately carved and the links pierced and joined together with fine black elasticized strings. The central feature is of square shape and gives the impression that it may be a watch but it is in fact a compass. The carving is detailed and typical of this genre and the whole piece is in good condition for age, c1880. Although these may have been created as mourning pieces, they are still most decorative to wear with other jet jewellery and this example would have been created for a smaller wrist. Maximum internal diameter unstretched 2.1 ins (5.1cm). Weight 10 grams.
