This is a stylish original and complete set of 9ct gold studs for a variety of collars. It is contained in a leatherette box with has a faux tortoise pattern and fine gilt tooling. When the box is opened it reveals a lid lined with cream silk and the main box is framed with cream velvet and braid with a central black velvet panel which has six specific depressions with labels for the individual studs. These are described as being for the Back x 1, Soft Collar x 1, Dress Collar x 1, Stiff Collar x 1 and Dress Front x 2. These are all of 9ct gold. The satin fabric hinges are marked on one side, ‘The OP (in a diamond) Set’ and the other hinge has the words ‘Pat No. 319,947’. The box opens and closes nicely and is in very good condition for age with some rubbing of the corners and a spot inside the lid where a label appears to have been removed, but otherwise the item is in very good usable condition. This is a fascinating set showing the varieties of studs used by gentlemen in the late 19th century and being in the fitted box would have made them much safer from being misplaced when not in use. 5 ins (13cm) x 2 ins (5.5cm) x 0.5 ins (1.5cm). Weight 74 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 398.
