This is quite an unusual and rare nutmeg grater of cylindrical form with intricate floral engraving on the exterior and on the top. The lid is hinged and when opened a section of the grater drops down which is also hinged, to reveal the original steel grater. Inside the remainder of the tube is a space which would hold the grated nutmeg and several whole nutmegs. The piece has no maker’s mark but does test as silver, most likely silverplate. It is in very good condition for age. This would make a delightful addition to a collection of nutmeg graters or small silver objet de vertu. Diameter 1 ins (2.5cm), height 2.6 ins (6.5cm). Weight 48 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 103. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $42.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
