This is a stunning quality 9ct gold pyx which would have been used for holding the Host for use by a priest visiting ill or incapacitated parishioners. It is made in watch-form with a matching ring at the top for attachment to a chain. It is engraved with the classic initials ‘IHS’ (representation of Jesus Christ) and opens to show an even more brightly gilded interior. The item plus ring are both marked for 9ct gold and the pyx itself is stamped for Pellegrini & Co. - the renowned seller of religious items in Australia. This piece would date to the early 20th century and is in stunning condition. Diameter approx. 1.6 ins (4cm). Weight 34 grams. This item can be seen in the book, "How the Watch was Worn - A Fashion for 500 Years", on page 213. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $49.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
