This is a most appealing small sterling silver chatelaine with decorative waist plaque with complex central monogram and engraved borders. This has the most unusual feature of being hinged to the combined upper waist plaque and hook – the latter for attachment to an outfit by placing this behind the belt. The hinged effect would enable the chains and pieces to be lifted for easier access. Both components of the waist plaque have the marks for London, 1875 and a maker’s mark ‘JC’. The chains end in three functional silver swivels. This would be a lovely item to collect as it is waiting for a new owner to place three appropriate chatelaine pieces at the ends of the chains. These could be pencil, mesh purse, perfume bottle, notebook, possibly sewing implements – even a watch or whatever took my lady’s fancy. The condition of all components is good for age. Maximum length 8.25 ins (21cm), width of waist plaque 1.75 ins (4.5cm). Weight 32 grams.
