This is an unusual vest chain in black vulcanite and consists of large links that are six-sided. At one end is a metal swivel painted black, and at the other end is a large hook to place over a belt or buttonhole. This also suspends a shorter chain with a book-form fob – also of vulcanite. This would have been appropriate to wear during mourning or if the wearer’s preference was for black as a contrast, and could have been worn by either a woman or a man (and could possibly be worn on a modern-day “Goth” outfit!). The condition is excellent apart from some slight rusting of the swivel and ring. Please note that the watch shown in one image is not included. Length chain plus hook 14.5 ins (36.8cm). Weight 12 grams. This item appears in my book, “How the Watch was Worn, A Fashion for 500 Years” on page 107.
