This is an attractive small octagonal box which appears to be Oriental celadon. The top is decorated with a stylised flower and the sides are ribbed. There is no maker’s mark on the base. When opened, the edges of the two halves are stained red, presumably from rouge. An alternative suggestion has been made that this is an ink pot. The condition is good apart from a few fine cracks. This would be a nice addition to a collection of small Oriental pieces. 2.5 ins (6cm) x 2.5 ins (6cm) x 2 ins (5cm). Weight 156 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 419.
