This is a lovely treen egg-form piece which is constructed of dark timber with figuring. It unscrews in the centre to reveal a steel nutmeg grater set in a paler treen frame. This also unscrews to reveal a space beneath where the grated nutmeg would fall and for storage of the nutmeg itself. This is a charming, tactile piece and is in excellent condition for age apart from a very slight crack in the centre near the section that unscrews, but this does not detract in any way. It would be a lovely addition to a collection of desirable nutmeg graters. Length top to bottom 2.25 ins (5.5cm). Weight 18 grams. This item appears in my book, Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 103. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $35.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
