This is a lovely treen egg-form piece which is constructed of dark timber with figuring. It unscrews in the centre to reveal a steel nutmeg grater set in a paler treen frame. This also unscrews to reveal a space beneath where the grated nutmeg would fall and for storage of the nutmeg itself. This is a charming, tactile piece and is in excellent condition for age apart from a very slight crack in the centre near the section that unscrews, but this does not detract in any way. It would be a lovely addition to a collection of desirable nutmeg graters. Length top to bottom 2.25 ins (5.5cm). Weight 18 grams. This item appears in my book, Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 103.
