This is an original tole document box decorated with hand-painted tulips, stylised flowers and “hearts aflame” at the two ends. It has a top carrying handle and a catch at the front which closes it securely but it can be made even more secure with the attached chain and clip or with the addition of a padlock. The paintwork is in good condition but the main black surface shows signs of wear and there are “dings” and a tiny amount of internal rust appropriate for age and it having been loved and used. The hinge is adequately sound. This would be a lovely addition to a collection of tole folk art. Length 5.5 ins (14cm), width 9 ins (23cm), depth 5.25 ins (13.5cm). Weight 460 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 62.
