This is a beautiful mid-19th century Tunbridge glove box with floral tessellated mosaic marquetry akin to Berlin wool tapestry patterns. The patterns on this box include a spray of flowers on the top of the lid and a band of leaves around the sides. The actual box appears to be burr walnut. The interior is lined with red satin for the lid with additional slots for toiletry items and/or glove stretcher and the base of the box is lined with paper. There is a mother of pearl keyhole and a key which does not appear to currently work. The exterior of the box is in very good condition for age. The paper lining has some staining and small splits at the edges. This is a very nice example of the craftsmanship of Tunbridge pieces. 9.5 ins (24.5cm) x 2.75 ins (7cm) x 3.75 ins (9cm). Weight 364 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 402.
