Le Blond Needle Box from the 'Fancy Subject Set', mid-19th Century
This is a delightful and rare needle box by Le Blond from the ‘Fancy Subject Set’ of “The Flower Maiden” (CL73). This item and a discussion on Baxter and Le Blond needle boxes were included in Nerylla Taunton’s book, “Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries”. This little box was also shown in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out”. This little box depicts a pretty young maiden with low cut dress surrounded with foliage and flowers. This appears to be covered by a transparent, possibly glass, cover and the image has a gilt frame. The actual box which is of cardboard has pink paper edging. Both box and lid have splits at some corners which would not be unusual for such a fragile item of this age. This is a very pretty little box to compliment a collection of containers for packets of needles which was their original purpose. 1.25 ins (3cm) x 2 ins (5cm) x 0.25 ins (0.75cm). Weight 8 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 301.
