French Wig Powderer in Bellows-form, Late 18th-early 19th Century
Made from beechwood with a tin funnel front, this French wig powderer has leather bellows and binding. On the top of the bellows is a removable cork through which the wig powder could be poured and when the cork is replaced the bellow is activated the powder would spray out the front metal nozzle. It is marked on the bottom 'Made in France' and also has the name of the shop in London where it was to be sold - but this is not legible. The leather of the bellows is significantly perished at the back but in many ways this actually adds to the historical originality and significance of this fascinating toiletry item of a past era. 7 ins (17cm) x 2.5 ins (6cm) x 2 ins (5cm). Weight 62 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 428.
