This is a seven-sided paper covered box in a deeply textured faux tortoiseshell. It has two clips which when opened reveal a complete set of faux tortoiseshell and steel manicure tools. The interior lid has a large mirror which is edged with gathered silk and fine brown cord. The base of the box is lined with deep cream velvet with fitted spaces and loops to hold the tools and this is also edged with gathered silk and a row of cord. The tools consist of two steel lidded boxes, a buffer with potentially replaceable chamois, two pairs of scissors, nail file, cuticle tool and multiple other implements. The condition of the outer box is quite good for age. The mirror is intact but a little bit of the cording needs to be glued back into position. There is minimal rust on the tools and the lid of one box but otherwise the tools are in good condition for age. 12 ins (30.5cm) x 8 ins (20.5cm) x 2 ins (5cm). Weight 780 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page387.
