Keeping crickets as pets has been a part of Eastern, especially Chinese, culture. The song of the cricket was appreciated or else some crickets were used for fighting. These boxes can be identified by the ventilation holes. This example is carved from green soapstone, with fluted edges to the lid and sides and has sections carved with decorative ventilation grids. The lid is inlaid with abalone shell in leafy branch floral motifs. This is a most attractive item and may have been enjoyed by its original inhabitants! It is in very good condition. 4 ins (10cm) x 3 ins (7.5cm) x 1.25 ins (3.5cm). Weight 216 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 283.
