This is a delightful, vivid red item which would be hard to lose! It is designed as a wrist-held knitting or other yarn holder and has a strap to hold over the hand. The two halves open and screw closed at the centre. It has an additional feature of perforated needle gauges on the base so one can not only have one’s wool ready at hand but can check the appropriate size of required needles. This style of wool holder has been made in precious metals such as silver filigree and earlier examples were also used for working with silk when knitting or tatting. This is a very practical and collectible item. Size of ball without strap is 4 ins (10cm) x 4.5 ins (11.5cm) x 12 ins (27cm) circumference. Weight 98 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 302.
