This attractive Chinese dark-coloured hinged square wooden handkerchief box is decorated with a scene of a temple and bridges, surrounded by a repeating floral motif in mother-of-pearl, the body set with four panels engraved with landscapes. There is a short crack in the base of the box and the lid has a longer crack mainly visible on the inside, but on the outside at the top there are two of the small mother-of-pearl oval leaves that are missing, which could possibly be replaced. There are a few very small losses of the stringing and the mother-of-pearl on the top but all in all, the box is in very good condition for age. 8.5 ins (22cm) x 3.5 ins (9cm) x 8.5 ins (22cm). Weight 1054 grams. This item can be seen in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 402.
