This is a charming little American folk art box, most likely a ditty box, painted and decorated with cut-out brass edging, brass doves and inverted heart in the centre of the lid. It was possibly created as a love token for a sweetheart. The front, back, sides and top have bands of detailed decorative brass (one section on the front has lifted slightly but could be re-glued. Later reddish-brown paint has been added at some stage and this has rubbed to reveal a creamy-brown under surface. The same paint has been used on the interior which also covers the hinges. The hinges and hasp appear to be original – one of the hinges is a little fragile. This is a rare and very unusual folk art ditty box with naïve yet appealing decoration. Width 9.25 ins (27.25cm) x depth 6.5 ins (17.5cm) x height 4.25 ins (11cm). Weight 1138 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 202.
