This is an elegant stationery box of decorative figured coromandel with engraved brass bands over the top and front and a brass key escutcheon. When opened the inside of the lid is lined with pale apricot watered silk and there are multiple compartments of different dimensions for notes, envelopes and precious paper memorabilia. These compartments have an edging of leather and are lined with a cream watered fabric. The base of the box has a faded pink velvet covering. The brass hinges and lock plates are decorative and in good order although there is no original key. Apart from a small pit on the top (see image) and some staining on the very bottom of the compartments, and the fact that the lid does not completely close at the front, the box is in excellent condition. 9.25 ins (24.25cm) x 4.5 ins (12.5cm) x 6.75 ins (17cm). Weight 1226 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 381.
