This extraordinary box is somewhat like a 3-dimensional jigsaw puzzle! The mirror and its securing struts are removable and can then be stored in a slot and a drawer within the box. The whole section can be carefully assembled with the finished item presenting as per the main image. The box has a veneer of shell with a bird and branch detail on the top and scrolling pattern around the mirror and on the struts. The remaining surfaces are blackened lacquer. The handle of the drawer and the side pins of the mirror appear to be of brass. The overall condition is very good for age apart from a small area of veneer loss on the lid and some scattered bubbling of the veneer. The mirror appears original with generalized fine spotting. This is a fantastic example of craftsmanship and ingenuity and would make a delightful addition to a collection of Oriental items particularly if displayed in its fully functional “glory”.
