This is a most attractive oval patch box dating from the 18th century. It appears to have a shell lining with the outer surface being of a deep orange/red paint with gold accents. The shaped hinge and lifting surface are of gold. At the top is an oval decorative panel with the central oval of black framed and with a floral motif in at least two colors of gold. There is also a small floral feature on the base. Inside the box one can see the shell lining and the lid has an original mirror. The condition of the box is very good for age although the mirror has marked discoloration (which is not unusual for its age), the base has one tiny chip which is only obvious when the box is inverted and the lid has one area of small leaf which is missing its gold filling, but the overall effect is particularly charming. Width 1.75 ins (4.5cm). Weight 60 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 418. Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $17.00 USD. This item is covered by own insurance policy. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
