This is a most appealing biscuit box, redolent of a previous, more elegant period of time. It is six-sided with a hinged lift-up lid with intriguingly shaped finial. There are two circular lifting handles – one on each side – attached to a “lion’s head”. All of the visible surfaces have an intricate scrolling engraved pattern. The box stands on four feet and on the base it has the markings 2547 and a scratch of 41; there is no obvious maker’s mark. The box appears most likely to be of silverplate. The condition is very good for age although there is some wearing of the silver plate on the top of the box. This would be a great addition to the décor of a home and would look most decorative on a sideboard. Maximum width 7.5 ins (19.5cm) x 6 ins (15.1cm) x height 7.75 ins (19.7cm). Weight 1030 grams. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $52.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 98.
