This half case, sixth plate ambrotype depicts a Civil War era lady who has been identified as 'Mrs J. Cobb' of Rushville, New York. Mrs Cobb wears a full gown with large white lace collar and an unusual head covering with ribbons. She also wears a stunning array of jewellery including earrings, a ring, a brooch and long guard chain to a watch nestled in the waistband of her gown; all of this has been picked out in gold. The half case may be gutta percha with brass clasp and an ornate, gilt mat to frame the image. This is quite a dark image with some mild tarnish and spotting. The condition of the case, mat and image is good for age with some spotting of the mat and minimal tarnish and spotting of the image. The image itself is very crisp. This would be a lovely addition to any collection of early photography with the added feature of showcasing the special fashions of the day. Sixth plate. Case measures 3.2 ins (7.8cm) x 3.7 ins (9.2cm). 122 grams. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $23.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
