This is a fascinating portrait of an older woman, possibly in mourning, wearing a dark coloured crinoline gown and unusual hair covering which includes lappets. Her cheeks are tinted soft pink and she wears spectacles. Her vest chain is attached at her waist to the watch in a watch pocket at the waistband. She also wears a heavy brooch at her throat and a pair of earrings; all her jewellery is picked out in gold. The ambrotype is housed in an embossed leather full case with rose coloured velvet interior. There is some moderate spotting which appears to be more on the back of the glass than on the image. The gilt mat shows patchy tarnish. The image itself is quite crisp and the case has minimal wear. This is an interesting portrait showing an older lady with fascinating head ornamentation and clear jewellery details. With care, the image could be much improved with restoration.
Ninth plate. Case measures 2.75 ins (7cm) x 2.5 ins (6.3cm). Weight 95 grams. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $21.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
