This ambrotype is housed in a quality case which we have been told is a gutta percha Union case. It features a lady and gentleman playing chess on front and back. Once the case is opened, it is lined with deep green velvet and houses the portrait of a very exotic looking dark haired woman wearing an off- the-shoulder gown and an impressive array of gold tinted jewellery. She has a chain at the waist which most likely passes to a watch in a pocket or behind the belt and as such would fit with the American-style of watch chatelaine of the mid-19th century. Her other jewellery includes earrings, bracelets and a neck chain which holds a pendant. The condition of the case and mat is very good for age. The detail of the lady is quite crisp but the background and whole surface appears mottled. The case closes firmly. This would be a lovely example to include in a collection illustrating the style of case and fashions of the era. Case dimensions 3 ins (7.5cm) x 2.5 ins (6.3cm). Weight 96 grams.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $23.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
