This is a typical Georgian knife box of black/grey fine shagreen (a popular covering that was made from sharkskin), with a brass lifting ring and escutcheon. It is pleasing when opened to discover that this has not been converted to a stationery box as so many have been. The interior is lined with deep red velvet and the main storage section has its original multiple compartments with eighteen spaces for knives and forks. The condition is consistent with age with some variation in tone of the shagreen and one side and the rear has repairs or small sections that are missing (see images). It would not be unexpected for the shagreen to have suffered some losses during its long life. The box still has a key present which turns the lock but does not currently seem to catch. The velvet lining shows rubbing at the edges but is still present. It is a special feature to find such a box in an original condition compatible with its original use. Height of closed box 13ins (33cm) x width 8.5ins (21.5cm). Weight 1.56kgs. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 82. Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $52.00 USD – with no tracking is cheaper. This item is covered by own insurance policy. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
