Female vanity has a long history. Wavy hair has usually been considered most desirable…and this could be a catastrophe for those with straight hair that had no curl! Various appliances have been created to wave or curl the hair. This is a boxed pair of Ever-Ready “Self-Heating Waving Tongs”, made in England and patented. It is complete in the box with instructions that if followed carefully would provide NO DANGER. The tongs fold and when opened one section can be pulled off to reveal a space to insert carbon cylinders (part of one carbon is still present). These were then lit to heat the tongs which, according to the directions, could then be used to wave or curl the hair. Apparently separate boxes of the carbon cylinders were available at the time. The tongs themselves are in good condition. The deep blue cardboard box has splits on the corners of the lid but it is of value that it is still present. This would be a most interesting item to add to a display of early beauty utensils and demonstrates the lengths that our ancestors – as well as ladies of today – will go to, to enhance their appearance. 5.5 ins (14cm) x 2 ins (5cm) x 1 ins (2.5cm). Weight 186 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 393. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $30.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
