This is a shaped leather-bound hatbox for official use containing an original beaver skin and ostrich feather hat (maker The C.E. Ward Company. New London, Ohio – founded in 1891). This box also includes a leather belt with Masonic buckle with chains and swivels for a ceremonial sword, and two further swivels attached to the belt for additional accoutrements. The hat appears to have been tailored for one Arthur W. Johnson (inscribed on a label on the underside of the hat). The condition is generally very good for age although the feathers are extremely fragile and part of the strap for the hatbox is absent at the end. This is a most intriguing example of early Masonic paraphernalia. Hat size 7 ⅛. Box measures 20.5 ins (52cm) x 9.5 ins (24.1cm) x 7.5 ins (19cm). Weight 1.4 kgs. This item appears in my book, “Antique boxes, Inside and Out” on page 406. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $62.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
