This box is a beautiful example of the Russian carved walrus bone from the Provence of Arkhangelsk (Archangel), Kholmogory. This area is renowned for bone etc fretwork and carving. This is a typical example with gilt-backed fretwork and bands of penwork. This box has a large pincushion on the top (replaced), and inside there is one complete division and it is lined with cream paper. The strut for opening and lock are of fairly basic design and the feet are of carving and decoration equivalent to the box. This box could have been used for needlework or as a dressing box, using the pincushion for larger hatpins. The condition is very good for age. Although such boxes range from folk varieties to exquisite top of the range examples, this piece is a lovely and desirable item to add to any collection of sewing or general boxes, Russian items or folk art. Length 5.75 ins (14.5cm), width 8.5 ins (21.5cm), height 4.5 ins (11.5cm). Weight 640 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 322. Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $43.00 USD. This item is covered by own insurance policy.
