This is an elegant hair and 14 carat gold necklace. The hair has been intricately woven into multiple small balls with a gold bead between. At the ends there is a functional clasp (see image), and in the centre is a plain gold cylinder with a small ring to which could be added a locket, a cross or any other pendant desired. The extra special feature of this piece is that it comes with a yellowed piece of tissue with the words, “This necklace was given to Dorothy in 1926 by cousin Sarah Johnson Berliner (?)”, as well as “Her mother had it made of S’s hair in 1873 in New York City”, (some of the names are a little indistinct – see image). This is most likely to have been a mourning item. The condition is very good for age; there are scattered areas of fraying with some loss of the plaiting but these are only visible on very close inspection, and it is remarkable that it has remained in such good condition. This would be an excellent hair example to include in collections of mourning and sentimental jewellery.
Maximum length 21.5 ins (54.5cm). Weight 6 grams. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $46.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
