This style of box was popular, particularly in France, as a memento of marriage during the late 19th century. This example has been made in France (as the back of the box has the label for the maker, Mon Rousseau, Rue de la Perle.11.13 Le Mans – see image), but was possibly for an English order as the box itself has a gilt frame with coloured rose, shamrock and thistle decoration. This piece includes the classic gilt foliage, coloured plaster flowers, ribbon and mirror but is unusual in that it also includes curled locks of hair and one intricately patterned hair feature. One lock and this curled piece sit free. The box is glazed on three sides and has a wooden back, and is lined with red velvet. The back of the box can be removed presumably to allow access to add or remove additional small tokens. There are three crests at the top of the box and it stands on four gilt legs. The condition of the complete item is very good for age apart from a small section of the larger flower being missing (see image), but a little of this will be included - fortunately this does not detract from its appeal. When posted, this item will be disassembled for safer shipping as the central feature is a little mobile within the case. This is a most heartwarming item documenting the special occasion of marriage and would make a fascinating display and talking point. Height 12 ins (30.5cm) x width 9.5 ins (2cm) x depth 6.5 ins (16.5cm). Weight 1706 grams. This item appears in my book, Antique Boxes, Inside and Out" on page 71.
Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $55.00 USD – with no tracking is cheaper. This item is covered by own insurance policy. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
