This stylish games box appears to be of olivewood with ebonised and olivewood pieces. The exterior is plain timber but very elegant. There is a key escutcheon and lock and key (lock not currently functioning). It opens at 90 degrees with a curved strut hinge to reveal a fitted interior. This is full of visible and secret spaces for the various components. At the front of the base is a lift-out tray for the treen and ebony chess pieces so that the complete set can be removed from the box with a lifting knob in the centre. Behind this is a curved slot for the checker pieces. Behind that again are four timber boxes with oval brass plaques for the four card suits. Inside these are a mixture of counters in blue and cream. When these smaller boxes are removed a further compartment is revealed containing four timber dishes to hold the counters and a plastic bag containing a variety of counters and dominoes. On either side of this compartment are two smaller slots for cards – one set is present and this was manufactured by Chas Goodall & Son Ltd of London, England, 1909. The other slot does not have any cards but holds the key for the lock. Looking at the lid, there are two sections at the top held in position by two rotating brass catchers. These secure a folding box which opens out to form the chess or checkerboard and inside several black cards that could have been marked with chalk to keep score; one of these has a chalk drawing of an apparent Rolls Royce. Once the board has been removed the lid contains a hinged shelf that lifts up to give access to the dominoes. Each component needs to be placed carefully back in its original position for the whole box to close correctly. The overall condition is excellent for age apart from the fact that two sections of the base are slightly uneven but this does not prevent it the box from sitting flat. This box would be a great example to collect or to use for its original purpose. 13 ins (33cm) x 5 ins (12.6cm) x 10 ins (25.3cm). Weight 3720 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 254.
