This is a typical example of the various Tartan Ware Spa items made during the 19th century with different tartans from different clans used for the decoration. This example features the “Prince Charlie” design and has a pull-off lid to show the interior space for the calling cards. The interior, the edges and the corners are in good condition for age but there is definite loss of some of the lacquer (but not the colouring beneath) of the surface of the front and back of the case. An expert restorer may be able to correct this. These card cases are very desirable and collectable. Width 2.75 ins (7.5cm), height 4 ins (10.2cm), depth 0.5 ins (1cm). Weight 38 grams. This item can be seen in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 396.
