This good hand-coloured image depicts a mother and son, she wearing a long chain around her neck attached to a watch, and other jewellery. The lad is possibly holding his hat, and his dark outfit is accented with a white collar and gold buttons. Both mother and son have faint tinting of their cheeks, and the lady’s chain has been gilded as has her ring. The condition of the actual image is very good for age although the front component of the case is absent. The mat and surrounds are in good condition apart from one small area of tarnish. The back of the case is in good condition. This image demonstrates the fashions of the mid-19th century for two generations and would add to a collection of photographs of the era.
Sixth plate, half case. Width 2.75 ins x height 3.25 ins. Weight 72 grams. This item can be seen in the book, "How the Watch was Worn - A Fashion for 500 Years", on page 103.
