This daguerreotype is housed in its original leather case with red velvet mat adorned with flowers and a butterfly and features a mature, bespectacled woman wearing an elaborate, pale-coloured bonnet with large tie. She wears a dark-coloured gown and lace mittens. Around her neck is a long guard chain to an unseen watch with a fob on the chain. The chain is painted gold and there may be some slight colouring of her cheeks. The condition of the case and the mat is very good for age. The condition of the daguerreotype is also very good for age with some scattered spotting and a thin edge of tarnish in two areas. Sixth plate, full case. 2.75 x 3.25 ins. (7 x 8 cm) Weight 104 grams. Photographer unknown. This would be a lovely addition to a collection of daguerreotypes or one of fashions of the mid-19th century to Civil War era. This item can be seen in the book, "How the Watch was Worn - A Fashion for 500 Years", on page 103. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $28.50 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
