This unusual box is lined with deep orange-red velvet. Inside is a fitted space for a pair of midwife’s scissors for cutting the umbilical cord. Included is a small protective shield in metal with a central slit which is commonly described as being an aid for newborn circumcisions. This example has some dots on one side – these are not easily explained. This piece appears to be of better quality metal than the scissors. On the base of the box is a label that states, E.A. White, M.D. Columbia Falls, Maine with a space beneath for directions. This would imply that this boxed set was owned and used by a medical practitioner. To the modern eye, it looks extraordinary to have a velvet-lined box for such instruments! The overall condition is very good for age. This unusual box with contents would be of interest to those who collect medical or nursing items, or to those with more eclectic tastes.
Width 5 ins (12.6cm) x 3 ins (7.5cm) x 2.25 ins (5.7cm). Weight 238 grams.
