This is a most interesting and attractive papier mache box for pens, decorated with flora and fauna. The shape of the opening of this box is typical for those made originally in Persia. It has a sliding mechanism with specifically curved pieces for the opening that fit into each other (see images). The surface of the box is decorated with flowers such as irises and roses, as well as birds and insects on an ochre-coloured background. The base is black, as is the interior, but the sides of the inner sliding component are red. Within the box is a feather quill. The condition of the decoration is very good for age. The base shows one stable crack and some areas of loss of the surface, but this does not detract from the overall item. There is also a fine crack along the long edge of the top decorative section of the box. This style of unusual box would make a significant addition to a collection of writing-related pieces. Maximum length 9 ins (22.8cm). Weight 96 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 344.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $42.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
