This sepia image depicts a lovely couple and is most likely a wedding photograph. She wears a dark coloured bustle gown with a corsage of flowers attached to the bodice and a guard chain attached to a watch in a crochet watch pocket. He is seated (his shoes may have done with a polish!) but she is most elegant. This image demonstrates the fashions of the later 19th century and the popularity of a watch worn in this manner. Other images have been seen where a watch pocket of crochet has most likely been added to the gown. The photographer appears to be W. Lawson, Danville, Illinois. The condition of the image is good with some slight spotting visible on the background and slight foxing on the plain back of the cabinet card. At some stage a label has been stuck below the photograph and if one attempts to remove it the effect is actually worse – but it could be framed to exclude this. The image and details are nicely crisp. Mount width 4.5 ins x 6.5 ins. (11cm x 16.5cm). This item appears in my book, "How the Watch was Worn - A Fashion for 500 Years”. Registered Air Mail Post to the USA would be $13.00. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
