This is a most appealing sterling silver spectacle chatelaine decorated with fine scrolling foliage and flowers on all surfaces of the piece. It has a classic open top lined with deep blue velvet to protect the glasses, short chains and decorative waist hook. The case and the waist hook are both hallmarked H & T, possibly for Hilliard & Thomason, Birmingham c1874. Of further interest is a dedication on the front to “Agnes Pennington From Her Fellow Officers With Their Best Wishes On Her Leaving Lancaster Castle June 18th 1885”. The overall condition is excellent for age. Such pieces would be a lovely addition to early optical items or could be worn with flair with a small lace handkerchief tucked in the top!
Maximum length including waist hook 7 ins (17.7cm). Weight 40 grams.
This item appears in my book, “Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance” on page 170.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $36.50 USD – with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
