This interesting Russian silver and niello belt buckle is one of three niello pieces we are currently listing (see Items GEC-001048 and GEC-001049). The buckle is in the typical shape and style of Russian items. It most likely originated in the Caucasus mountain spa resort of Kabkazb although it is not labelled for this as are the two other pieces currently on offer. The front of the buckle is decorated with niello leaves and foliage and the centre with a separate pointed oval section that covers the closure. The back has a central large hook and loop, and two narrow silver bars through which the fabric would have been threaded to secure the ends of the belt. Both pieces have a slightly earlier Russian mark which includes the notation for 84 zolotniks plus another motif which was used a little earlier than the lady’s profile. There are also initials which are probably those of the maker. The condition for age is very good although there may have been some re-soldering of the hook and loop at the back, and the bars shows slight unevenness consistent with age. This piece would pair very nicely with either the perfume bottle or coin purse we have listed, or would look amazing with all three pieces together! Width buckle 3 ins (7.6cm). Weight 46 grams. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $35.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
